Aftercare
Aftercare After Laser Treatments: A Practical Guide

After laser treatments at Re:berry Hongdae, the main rules are gentle cleansing, steady moisturizing, strict sun protection and avoiding heat, scrubs and strong actives for several days. Mild redness or warmth usually settles within hours to a few days. Stronger resurfacing lasers need longer care, so always follow the specific instructions your doctor gives.

Why does laser aftercare matter?

Lasers work by delivering controlled energy into the skin. Even gentle toning lasers cause a small, temporary disturbance of the skin barrier. Good aftercare helps the skin recover smoothly, lowers the risk of irritation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and protects the results you are paying for. Poor aftercare, especially sun exposure, is one of the most common reasons results disappoint.

Does aftercare differ by laser type?

Yes. This guide focuses on the low-downtime lasers commonly used in Korean clinics, but intensity varies:

  • Toning lasers: Laser toning and pico toning usually cause mild redness for a few hours. See Laser Toning and PicoSure Pro / Pico Toning.
  • Genesis and similar non-ablative lasers: Warmth and pinkness that settle quickly. See Genesis Laser.
  • Spot pigment treatments: Treated spots may darken and form tiny crusts that flake off over about 5 to 10 days.
  • Fractional or resurfacing lasers: Longer redness, peeling and stricter care for one to two weeks.

If your doctor gives you different instructions, follow those over this general guide.

What should I do on the day of treatment?

  • Expect warmth, mild redness or a tight feeling for a few hours.
  • Apply a soothing, fragrance-free moisturizer if the skin feels dry.
  • Use a cool, clean compress briefly if the skin feels hot; avoid ice directly on the skin.
  • Stay out of strong sun, and wear a hat and sunscreen if you go outside.
  • Skip alcohol, saunas, jjimjilbang, hot baths and workouts.

How should I wash my face after laser?

For most toning lasers, you can wash your face the same evening with lukewarm water and a mild, low-foam cleanser. Use your fingertips, not a brush or cloth, and pat dry with a clean towel. If you had spot treatment with crusts, cleanse gently around them and do not scrub. For timing details, see When can I wash my face after laser?

What skincare should I use?

Use

  • Gentle cleanser
  • Barrier-repair moisturizer with ingredients such as ceramides, panthenol or glycerin
  • Simple hydrating toner or essence without fragrance or alcohol
  • Broad-spectrum mineral or chemical sunscreen, SPF 50

Pause

  • Retinoids, including retinol
  • AHAs, BHAs and peeling pads
  • Physical scrubs and cleansing brushes
  • High-strength vitamin C if it stings
  • Fragranced or essential-oil-heavy products

Most people restart actives after about 3 to 7 days for toning lasers, or longer after stronger treatments. The answer page What skincare should I use after laser? covers this in more depth.

When can I wear makeup?

After toning lasers, many people can wear makeup the next day, and some the same evening if the skin is calm. Wait longer if there are crusts or broken skin. Use clean brushes or sponges and remove makeup gently. Mineral-based products may feel more comfortable on sensitive skin.

How important is sun protection?

Very. UV and visible light can trigger PIH, especially in medium to darker skin tones and in melasma-prone skin. Seoul's summer sun is strong, and UV still reaches skin on cloudy days.

  • Apply SPF 50 every morning, even indoors near windows.
  • Reapply every 2 to 3 hours outdoors, or after sweating.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and seek shade, especially around midday.
  • Consider tinted sunscreen with iron oxides for added visible-light protection.

What should I avoid for the first few days?

  • Saunas, steam rooms and hot springs for about 3 days or as advised
  • Swimming pools and the sea until the skin is calm
  • Intense exercise for about 24 to 48 hours
  • Picking or scratching crusts
  • Waxing, threading or other facial treatments for about 1 to 2 weeks

Is it safe to fly after laser?

For most toning lasers, flying the next day is usually fine. Cabin air is dry, so carry a moisturizer and reapply often, and use sunscreen at window seats. After stronger treatments, ask your doctor. See Can I fly after laser?

A simple day-by-day outline for toning lasers

  1. Day 0: Cool, calm and protect. Gentle cleanse in the evening, moisturizer, no heat.
  2. Days 1 to 2: Light makeup is usually fine. Keep up moisturizer and SPF; skip workouts and saunas.
  3. Days 3 to 7: Skin usually feels normal. Gradually reintroduce actives if there is no stinging.
  4. Before your next session: Keep sun exposure low and tell the doctor about any reactions.

Consistency between sessions matters as much as the session itself, particularly for melasma and uneven tone.

Frequently asked questions

How long does redness last after laser toning?

For most people, mild redness after laser toning or pico toning fades within a few hours, occasionally lasting until the next day. Sensitive skin or stronger settings can take longer. Persistent or worsening redness should be checked by the clinic.

Can I use vitamin C serum after laser?

Many doctors suggest pausing strong vitamin C serums for a few days if your skin feels sensitive, as low-pH formulas can sting. Once the skin is calm, vitamin C can be a helpful antioxidant alongside sunscreen. Follow your doctor's specific advice.

Why are my spots darker after laser?

After pigment-targeting laser, treated spots often look darker for several days before flaking off or fading. This is a common, expected response. If darkening spreads, persists for weeks or appears in untreated areas, contact the clinic, as it may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Can I go to a jjimjilbang after laser?

It is best to avoid saunas and jjimjilbang for at least a few days after laser, as heat and sweating can increase redness and the risk of pigmentation. Ask your doctor how long to wait for your specific treatment. Stronger or resurfacing lasers usually need a longer break.
