What does downtime actually mean?
Downtime is the period after a treatment when your skin looks or feels different enough to affect your plans. It is not the same as risk, and it is not the same for everyone. Two people having the same procedure can have very different recoveries depending on skin type, settings, the amount treated and whether bruising occurs.
The ranges below are typical general estimates commonly cited in aesthetic dermatology. Your doctor will give you a personal estimate at consultation based on your plan. Results vary by individual.
Little or no downtime
HydraFacial
Skin may look slightly pink for under an hour. Makeup and normal activities are usually fine the same day. A popular choice right before events.
Laser toning and gentle pico toning
Mild redness typically fades within minutes to a few hours. Makeup is often possible the same or next day. Sun protection is essential for several days.
Beauty IV drips
No visible downtime. A small bruise at the needle site is possible.
Vacumed and similar body sessions
No downtime. Legs may feel tired after exercise in the chamber.
Hours to a couple of days
Botox and jaw Botox
Small bumps at injection points usually settle within 30 minutes to a few hours. Pinpoint bruises are possible. Avoid lying flat, massage and strenuous exercise for several hours. Results begin in about 3–7 days, with the full effect at around two weeks, so plan Botox at least two weeks before an event.
Skin Botox
Many tiny injection marks may cause light redness and small bumps for a few hours to a day.
Ultherapy Prime and Ulthera
Redness may last a few hours. Some people feel tenderness along the jaw or mild swelling for a few days, and occasional small bruises or tingling can occur. Most return to normal activity immediately. Lifting develops over 2–3 months.
Thermage FLX
Mild redness and slight swelling usually settle within hours to a day. Results build gradually over months.
Sofwave
Redness typically fades within hours. Mild tenderness is possible for a day or two.
ONDA face and body
Warmth and redness typically settle within hours. Tenderness or mild swelling can last a day or two in some cases.
About one to three days
Rejuran Healer and PDRN boosters
Small raised bumps at injection points are common and typically flatten within 1–3 days. Pinpoint bruises may last longer. See how long Rejuran bumps last.
CellREDM, Laetigen and Re2O
Depending on the method, expect mild redness, small bumps or swelling for around one to three days.
Exosome after microneedling
Downtime mostly reflects the needling step. Redness can last one to three days, sometimes longer with deeper treatment.
LDM water-drop lifting
Ultrasound-based care with essentially no downtime, often used to calm skin after other treatments.
Several days to two weeks
Dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane
Swelling is common for 2–7 days and can last up to two weeks, particularly in lips and under-eyes. Bruising, if it occurs, may take 1–2 weeks to fade. Read how long swelling lasts after filler.
Dooth and Mint thread lifts
Swelling and tightness often last 3–7 days, with possible bruising up to two weeks. Minor dimpling may take a little longer to settle. Avoid wide mouth opening, massage and saunas for a few weeks.
Keloid and scar injections
Little visible downtime, though the injected area may be tender. These are usually repeated at intervals of about 4–6 weeks.
How should I order treatments on a trip?
When combining treatments on one visit to Seoul, many patients follow a simple order:
- Early in the trip: treatments with the longest recovery, such as thread lifts or filler.
- Middle of the trip: lifting devices and skin boosters.
- Last days: zero-downtime options such as HydraFacial or laser toning.
Your doctor may change this order depending on how treatments interact. For example, energy-based lifting is often done before filler or several weeks later. See our 7-day treatment itinerary for a worked example.
What can make downtime longer?
- Alcohol, smoking and very salty food before or after treatment
- Blood-thinning medication or supplements, which increase bruising
- Saunas, hot baths and intense exercise too soon
- Rubbing or massaging treated areas
- Sun exposure after lasers
- Long flights, which can worsen facial swelling
How much buffer should I leave before an event?
- Zero-downtime facials and toning: 1–3 days before is usually fine.
- Botox: at least 2 weeks, for the full effect and any adjustment.
- Skin boosters: 1–2 weeks, so bumps settle and glow develops.
- Filler: 2 weeks or more.
- Thread lifts: 2–4 weeks for a settled look.
- Lifting devices: ideally 1–3 months for visible change.

Frequently asked questions
Which treatments have zero downtime?
HydraFacial, gentle laser toning, LDM, IV drips and Vacumed generally have no meaningful downtime for most people. Mild redness may appear briefly after lasers. Even zero-downtime treatments benefit from sunscreen and avoiding saunas on the same day, and individual responses can vary.
Can I go back to work the day after Botox or filler?
Most people return to work the same or next day after Botox. After filler, you can usually work, though swelling or bruising may be visible for a few days. Concealer can help once injection points have closed. Plan sensitive meetings or photos at least a week or two later.
Does downtime differ for men?
Downtime depends more on skin, treatment settings and bruising tendency than on gender. Men may notice swelling in the beard area or find concealing bruises harder without makeup. Shaving should usually be avoided on freshly treated skin for about a day, and longer after resurfacing.
What if my downtime lasts longer than expected?
Contact the clinic if swelling, redness or bruising lasts longer than your doctor indicated, or if you notice increasing pain, warmth, blistering or color changes. Prolonged recovery is often harmless, but it should be checked. Keep photos to help the doctor assess changes remotely if you have already left Seoul.
