Pigmentation
PicoSure Pro for Melasma in Hongdae

PicoSure Pro is a picosecond laser that can be used at low energy, often called pico toning, to gradually break up excess pigment in melasma. At Re:berry Hongdae, it is usually planned as a series of about 5 to 10 sessions spaced 1 to 4 weeks apart, combined with sun protection and topical care. Melasma can recur, and results vary.

Re:berry Clinic Hongdae

Why is melasma hard to treat?

Melasma is a chronic pigment condition that appears as symmetrical brown or gray-brown patches, typically on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. It is driven by a combination of UV and visible light, hormones, heat and inflammation, so the pigment cells are already overactive. Strong lasers that heat the skin can trigger them further, which is why melasma treatment is about steady control rather than one powerful session. Our Melasma page explains the condition in detail.

How does PicoSure Pro work on melasma?

PicoSure Pro delivers ultra-short laser pulses measured in picoseconds (trillionths of a second). The very short pulse creates a pressure effect that shatters pigment into tiny particles with relatively little heat compared with older nanosecond lasers. The body then clears the fragments gradually.

For melasma, doctors usually use low-fluence, multi-pass settings across the whole face. This is what Korean clinics call pico toning. The aim is to reduce pigment a little at each session without provoking inflammation. See PicoSure Pro / Pico Toning for the device overview.

Who is PicoSure Pro suitable for?

Pico toning may suit you if:

  • You have melasma that a doctor has confirmed, rather than freckles or sun spots alone
  • Your melasma is relatively stable, not rapidly spreading
  • You can commit to daily sunscreen and a series of sessions
  • You are willing to use maintenance treatment and topical care afterward

When to be cautious

Pico toning is generally postponed during pregnancy, with an active tan, with irritated or broken skin, or soon after starting medications that increase light sensitivity. If your melasma flares with heat or hormonal changes, the doctor may begin with topical therapy before adding laser. If you are unsure whether your spots are melasma at all, read How do I tell melasma from freckles?

What to expect during a session

  1. The skin is cleansed and photographed under consistent lighting so progress can be compared.
  2. Eye protection is placed. Numbing is often unnecessary at toning settings.
  3. The doctor passes the handpiece across the face in even layers. Most people feel light snapping or warmth.
  4. A soothing mask or cooling may follow, and sunscreen is applied before you leave.

Mild pinkness usually settles within a few hours. Some people notice a slight darkening of spots for a few days before they lighten.

How many sessions are needed?

Many plans begin with 5 to 10 sessions spaced 1 to 4 weeks apart, then move to maintenance every one to three months. Visible change is usually gradual; many patients judge progress after four or five sessions. Melasma is not cured by laser, and it can return with sun exposure, heat or hormonal shifts. Results vary by individual.

What can be combined with pico toning?

Re:berry designs a combination of treatments rather than relying on one device. For melasma, typical companions include:

  • Topical care: Doctor-guided brightening agents and barrier support between sessions.
  • Skin boosters: Rejuran Healer or PDRN may be added to support a calmer, more resilient skin barrier.
  • Vascular-focused lasers: Where redness accompanies melasma, a laser such as Genesis may be used carefully.
  • Oral medication: In some cases a doctor may consider prescription options after reviewing your health.

What are the alternatives?

Laser toning with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is the longer-established toning approach and is widely used for melasma in Korea. Some patients respond better to one than the other, and the choice depends on skin type, previous response and the doctor's assessment. Compare them in Pico Toning vs Laser Toning or read Laser Toning for Melasma.

Aftercare that protects your results

  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day and reapply when outdoors, including on cloudy Seoul days.
  • Wear a hat and avoid long saunas or hot yoga, as heat can worsen melasma.
  • Pause strong exfoliants for a few days after each session.
  • Report any unexpected darkening or white patches to the clinic.

Planning pico toning in Hongdae

  • Best for: Stable epidermal or mixed melasma under a maintenance plan

Frequently asked questions

Can PicoSure Pro make melasma worse?

It can if settings are too aggressive or sessions too close together, leading to rebound darkening or uneven light spots. This is why low-energy toning settings, adequate spacing and strict sun protection are used. Tell your doctor promptly if patches darken after a session.

Is pico toning better than laser toning for melasma?

Neither is universally better. Pico lasers deliver shorter pulses with less heat, which some doctors prefer for sensitive skin, while Q-switched laser toning has a longer track record. Choice depends on skin type, previous response and the doctor's experience with each device.

How soon can I wear makeup after pico toning?

Many people can apply makeup the next day, and some the same evening if the skin is calm. Use clean brushes and gentle products, and avoid heavy exfoliating cleansers for a few days. Your doctor may advise differently if your skin is sensitive.
