Hongdae, Seoul

How do I get from Seoul Station to Hongdae?

Seoul Station is the city's main rail hub, where KTX high-speed trains, subway Lines 1 and 4, the Gyeongui–Jungang Line and the AREX Airport Railroad meet. The most direct option to Hongdae is the AREX all-stop train toward Incheon Airport. Get off at Hongik University Station, a few stops along the line. The ride typically takes about 10–15 minutes.

Make sure you board the all-stop AREX service, not the Express train, which runs nonstop to Incheon Airport and does not stop at Hongik Univ.

What are the other routes?

  • Gyeongui–Jungang Line: also runs from Seoul Station to Hongik Univ. on some services; check the schedule as frequency varies.
  • Line 1 or 4 plus Line 2: possible but usually slower because of transfers.
  • Taxi: convenient with luggage, though travel time depends heavily on traffic.

Korean map apps such as Naver Map or Kakao Map show live train times and the right exit for your destination.

Tips for transferring at Seoul Station

The AREX platforms are underground and connected to the main station building, but it can take several minutes to walk there, especially from the KTX concourse with luggage. Follow the signs for "Airport Railroad" or "AREX". Transit cards such as T-money work on AREX all-stop trains. Allow a little extra time if you have a fixed appointment.

Planning a clinic visit around train travel

Seoul Station is a common starting point for people arriving from Busan, Daegu or other cities by KTX, and for travelers staying in hotels around Namdaemun or Jung-gu. A short AREX ride makes it practical to visit Hongdae for a consultation without changing hotels.

What to schedule if you are traveling again soon

If you are catching a KTX or flight shortly after your appointment, lower-downtime treatments are easier to manage, such as HydraFacial, laser toning or Botox. For filler, threads and stronger lasers, leave time in Seoul for swelling to settle. See our downtime planner and flying after skin treatments for guidance.

When is a good time to travel?

Weekday rush hours, roughly 7:30–9:30 and 18:00–19:30, bring the heaviest crowds on Seoul trains, and AREX can be busy with travelers and luggage at any time. Mid-morning and early afternoon are usually more comfortable. If you are carrying suitcases, use the elevators at both stations rather than escalators, and consider storing bags in station lockers or at your hotel before your appointment.

Is Hongdae close to the airport too?

Yes. Hongik Univ. sits on the AREX line between Seoul Station and the airports, so you can visit on your way to or from Incheon or Gimpo. See Incheon Airport to Hongdae and Gimpo Airport to Hongdae for those routes.

What if I arrive with luggage?

Hongik University Station is a large interchange, and some routes between lines involve long corridors. Coin lockers are commonly available in major stations, and many hotels hold bags before check-in. Arriving unhurried and unburdened makes the consultation more comfortable, especially if you plan to have a treatment the same day.

No. The AREX Express train runs nonstop between Seoul Station and Incheon Airport. Check the platform signs, since Express and all-stop trains use separate areas at Seoul Station.

Can I use a T-money card from Seoul Station to Hongdae?

Yes. T-money and similar transit cards work on the AREX all-stop train and on subway lines, so you can tap in at Seoul Station and tap out at Hongik University Station. Single-journey tickets are also sold at station machines. Fares are deducted automatically.

Is a taxi faster than the train from Seoul Station?

Not usually. A taxi can be convenient with heavy luggage, but road traffic in central Seoul is unpredictable, especially at rush hour. The AREX all-stop train is typically the more reliable option at about 10–15 minutes. Taxis are more useful late at night.
