Juvederm vs Restylane: Which Filler Suits You?

Juvederm and Restylane are both hyaluronic acid fillers, made by Allergan Aesthetics and Galderma respectively. Neither is simply better: each brand has gels of different firmness for different areas. At Re:berry Hongdae, a doctor chooses the product by area, tissue type and desired effect. Both typically last 6 to 18 months and can be dissolved.

What do Juvederm and Restylane have in common?

Juvederm and Restylane are two of the most widely used dermal filler brands in the world. Both are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that occurs naturally in skin and binds water. Both are cross-linked, which means the HA molecules are chemically linked so the gel lasts months rather than days. Both families include lidocaine-containing versions for comfort, and both can be broken down with the enzyme hyaluronidase if a result needs correcting or, in rare cases, a complication needs urgent treatment.

In practice, the skill and judgment of the injector usually affect your result more than the brand on the box. Still, the gel's properties do matter, and that is where the two families differ.

How are they made differently?

Juvederm: Vycross and Hylacross

Juvederm products are made with Allergan's Hylacross or Vycross technologies. Vycross products, such as Volbella, Volift and Voluma, mix shorter and longer HA chains to make a smooth, cohesive gel. These are often described as spreading evenly and integrating smoothly, and some doctors associate them with long-lasting results in deeper areas.

Restylane: NASHA and OBT

Galderma's Restylane range uses NASHA technology for firmer, particle-based gels, such as Restylane and Restylane Lyft, which are good for precise lifting and projection. Its OBT (Optimal Balance Technology) gels, marketed in some regions under names such as Kysse, Refyne and Defyne, are softer and designed to flex with facial movement. For more on the Galderma range, see our Restylane filler page.

Juvederm vs Restylane by treatment area

Instead of choosing a brand, doctors usually choose a specific product for a specific area. The comparison below uses general tendencies, not strict rules.

Lips

Both brands have soft lip products. Some doctors prefer a flexible Restylane OBT gel for natural movement; others prefer Juvederm Volbella for subtle hydration and definition. Lips usually swell for a few days with either.

Cheeks and midface

Firmer gels with good lifting capacity are needed here. Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft are both commonly used. The choice can depend on how much projection versus smooth contour you need.

Under-eye hollows

This delicate area needs a smooth gel with low tendency to attract water. Restylane products are frequently used here, while some doctors use Juvederm Volbella. Conservative amounts matter more than brand.

Nasolabial folds and marionette lines

Medium-firm gels from both families can soften folds. Sometimes the better approach is supporting the cheek above rather than filling the fold directly.

Chin and jawline

Structural products such as Juvederm Volux or firmer Restylane gels are used to add definition. The doctor will consider your bone structure and side profile.

Which lasts longer?

Longevity depends on the specific product, the amount, the area and your metabolism, not just the brand. Very roughly, lip fillers from either family often last around 6 to 12 months, while deep cheek or chin placements can last 12 to 18 months or more. Some Vycross products are associated with longer duration in deeper areas, and some Restylane products also have extended-duration data. Results vary by individual. See How long do Juvederm fillers last? and How long do Restylane fillers last?

Which causes less swelling?

Swelling is mostly about the area, the injection technique, the amount injected and your own tendency to swell. Lips and under-eyes swell more with any filler. Some gels absorb more water than others, which can matter in areas prone to puffiness, so doctors may choose lower-swelling products for the tear trough. Expect some swelling for several days with either brand.

Is one safer than the other?

Both brands have long safety records and are approved by regulators in many countries for specific uses. The risks, including bruising, lumps, infection and the rare but serious risk of vascular occlusion, apply to all HA fillers. Safety depends more on choosing a trained doctor, genuine product and appropriate technique. Our page Do Korean clinics use genuine products? explains what to ask.

How does a Re:berry doctor choose between them?

Re:berry's approach is diagnosis first. For filler, that typically means:

  1. Identifying the cause: Is the issue volume loss, laxity, muscle movement or skin quality? Filler is only the answer for some of these.
  2. Mapping areas: Each area may need a different product, and a single treatment can use more than one.
  3. Matching gel properties: Firmness for structure, flexibility for movement, smoothness for thin skin.
  4. Planning amounts conservatively: Starting with what is needed and reviewing after about two weeks.

You are welcome to say if you have a preference, especially if you have had a good experience with one brand before. Bring the product names from previous treatments if you can.

Summary: how to decide

  • Choose by area and goal, not by brand name alone.
  • Expect both to last months, not years, with variation by product.
  • Remember that both are reversible with hyaluronidase.
  • Focus on the doctor's assessment, product authenticity and aftercare.

Frequently asked questions

Is Juvederm or Restylane better for lips?

Both have well-established lip products. Restylane's flexible OBT gels are often chosen for natural movement, while Juvederm Volbella is popular for subtle volume and definition. The best choice depends on your lip shape, how much change you want and the doctor's experience with each product. Many people would be happy with either in skilled hands.

Can I mix Juvederm and Restylane in one face?

Yes. Doctors commonly use different products in different areas during the same treatment, for example a firmer gel in the cheeks and a softer gel in the lips. Using two brands is not a problem as long as each product suits its area. Just keep a record of what was used where.

If I had Juvederm before, can I switch to Restylane?

Generally yes. Both are hyaluronic acid fillers, and switching brands is common. Tell the doctor what you had, where, how much and when, since residual filler can still be present. This helps avoid overfilling and lets the doctor plan a product that works well with what remains.

Which filler is easier to dissolve?

Both Juvederm and Restylane can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Some studies suggest that different gels respond to the enzyme at slightly different rates, so one product may need more enzyme or more than one session. In practice, both are considered reversible, which is an important safety advantage of HA fillers.
