What is Juvederm filler?

Juvederm is a family of injectable gels based on hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in skin and binds water. The range is produced by Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, and is one of the most widely used filler brands worldwide. Many Juvederm products contain a small amount of lidocaine to make injection more comfortable.

The key idea behind the range is that different facial areas need different gel properties. A deep cheek injection needs a firmer, more lifting gel, while lips and fine lines need something softer that moves naturally. That is why Juvederm is not one product but a set of products designed for specific zones.

How does Juvederm work?

Once injected, the cross-linked HA gel sits in the tissue and physically adds volume or support. Because hyaluronic acid attracts water, the gel integrates with the surrounding tissue and gives a smooth, natural feel when placed correctly. Over months, the body gradually breaks the gel down, which is why results are temporary.

Area-specific design

Products in the Juvederm range differ in cross-linking, gel firmness and how much they spread. In general terms:

  • Firmer, high-lift gels are typically used on the cheekbones, chin and jawline to rebuild structure.
  • Medium gels are often chosen for nasolabial folds and moderate lines.
  • Softer, finer gels are used for lips, tear-trough-adjacent areas and superficial lines where a natural feel matters most.

Your doctor decides which product, how much and at what depth after examining your face. Product choice is a medical decision, not a menu choice.

Who is Juvederm suitable for?

Juvederm may suit adults who have lost volume with age, have folds that persist even when the face is at rest, or want subtle shaping of the lips, chin or profile. It is often discussed for:

  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines (see our Deep Wrinkles and Folds page)
  • Flat or hollow mid-cheeks
  • A short or recessed chin
  • Thin or asymmetric lips
  • Temple hollowing

When filler may not be the right choice

Filler adds volume; it does not tighten loose skin. If the main issue is laxity and sagging, an energy-based lifting device or threads may be more appropriate, sometimes combined with a small amount of filler. Filler is generally avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active skin infection or cold sores, and in people with known allergy to product components. Tell your doctor about blood thinners, autoimmune conditions and any previous filler or permanent implants.

What happens during a Juvederm appointment at Re:berry Hongdae?

  1. Consultation: A doctor assesses facial proportions, skin thickness and movement, and discusses whether filler alone or a combination plan fits your goals.
  2. Planning: Areas, product type and approximate volume are agreed, and the quote is confirmed in writing before treatment.
  3. Preparation: Makeup is removed, the skin is cleansed and topical numbing cream may be applied.
  4. Injection: The doctor injects with a fine needle or blunt cannula depending on the area and technique.
  5. Review: You check the result in a mirror and receive written aftercare instructions.

Re:berry's approach is to design a combination of treatments around a diagnosis rather than selling a single procedure, so you may be advised to treat fewer areas than you expected.

What is recovery like?

Most people return to normal activities the same day. Common, temporary effects include swelling, tenderness, small bruises and mild firmness at injection points. Lips typically swell more than other areas for the first few days. For practical tips, read Aftercare After Botox and Filler.

  • Avoid pressing or massaging the treated area unless instructed.
  • Skip saunas, intense exercise and alcohol for about 24 to 48 hours.
  • Sleep with your head slightly raised the first night if swelling is a concern.

What are the risks of Juvederm?

Serious complications are uncommon but real. The most important is vascular occlusion, where filler blocks a blood vessel; warning signs include severe pain, blanching or dusky skin color, and in rare cases visual changes. This is an emergency and should be reported to the clinic immediately. Other possible issues include lumps, asymmetry, delayed inflammatory nodules, infection and the Tyndall effect, a bluish tinge when filler sits too superficially.

A practical advantage of HA filler is that it can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed. This does not remove all risk, but it gives your doctor an option for correction.

How long does Juvederm last?

Longevity depends on the product, the area and your metabolism. As a general range, softer lip products may last around 6 to 12 months, while denser products in the cheeks or chin may last 12 months or longer. Areas that move a lot, such as the lips, tend to break filler down faster. Results vary by individual.

Juvederm or Restylane?

Both are reputable HA filler brands with area-specific products. They differ mainly in gel technology and how each product behaves in tissue, and an experienced doctor may use either depending on the area. See Juvederm vs Restylane for a criteria-based comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Does Juvederm filler hurt?

Most people describe a brief pinch and pressure. Many Juvederm products contain lidocaine, and topical numbing cream is usually applied beforehand, so discomfort is typically mild. Lips are more sensitive than cheeks or chin. Tell the doctor during treatment if anything feels sharp or unusual so they can pause and check.

Can I fly after Juvederm filler?

Many doctors suggest waiting at least 24 to 48 hours before flying so early swelling can settle and any concern can be checked in person. Cabin pressure is not known to move filler, but staying nearby for a day or two makes a follow-up review possible if needed.

Can Juvederm be removed if I don't like it?

Yes. Because Juvederm is hyaluronic acid, a doctor can usually dissolve it with hyaluronidase injections. More than one session may be needed, and the enzyme can cause temporary swelling. Dissolving is also part of emergency management if a vascular complication is suspected.

How much Juvederm will I need?

It depends on the area, your anatomy and the result you want. Some people need less than one syringe for lips, while full-face volume restoration may need several, sometimes staged over visits. Your doctor will recommend an amount at consultation and confirm the plan in writing.
