Can I Lie Down After Botox?

Most doctors advise staying upright for about 4 hours after Botox so the product settles where it was injected. After that, lying down and sleeping normally are usually fine. At Re:berry Hongdae, patients are also asked to avoid rubbing the area, intense exercise and saunas for the rest of the day. Results vary by individual.

Why stay upright after Botox?

Botox is injected into specific muscles. In the first few hours, many doctors prefer that you avoid pressure on the treated area and keep your head upright to reduce the small chance of product spreading to nearby muscles. The evidence for strict rules is limited, but the 4-hour guideline is a widely used precaution and easy to follow.

What else to avoid on the first day

  • Massaging or pressing the injected areas
  • Facials, face masks that need rubbing or tight headbands
  • Strenuous exercise, hot yoga, saunas and jjimjilbang
  • Alcohol, which may increase bruising
  • Bending over for long periods, such as heavy lifting

Sleeping after Botox

By bedtime, most people can sleep normally. If you usually sleep face-down, try sleeping on your back the first night to avoid pressure, especially after jaw Botox. There is no need to sleep sitting up.

Other Botox areas, same rule?

The upright guideline applies whether Botox is used for forehead lines, crow's feet, a gummy smile or jaw slimming. After jaw Botox, also avoid chewing very hard foods such as tough meat or gum for the first day, and do not press on the jaw muscle. For skin Botox, which is spread more superficially across the face, avoid rubbing during cleansing that evening. Tiny bumps or redness at injection points usually settle within an hour.

What about flights and long bus rides?

Sitting upright on a plane or bus is fine. Avoid resting your face against the window. Many travelers fly the day after Botox without problems.
